Kepolisian Negara Republik
Indonesia atau biasa disingkat Polri merupakan Kepolisian Nasional di
Indonesia. Polri bertanggung jawab langsung pada Presiden. Polri menjalankankan
tugas – tugas kepolisian di seluruh wilayah NKRI. Polri dipimpin oleh Kepala
Kepolisian Negara Republik Indonesia. Sejak tanggal 22 Oktober 2010, Jenderal
Polisi Timur Pradopo menjabat sebagai Kapolri. Kapolri bertanggung jawab langsung pada Presiden.
Dalam menjalankan tugasnya, Kapolri dibantu oleh Wakapolri.
Organisasi kepolisian Indonesia
disusun secara berjenjang mulai dari tingkat pusat hingga kewilayahan.
Organisasi kepolisian tingkat pusat dikenal dengan Markas Besar Polri atau
Mabes Polri. Sementara itu, untuk organisasi kepolisian tingkat kewilayahan
disebut dengan Kepolisian Negara Republik Indonesia Daerah atau Polda.
Polri sendiri merupakan aparat
penegak hukum di Indonesia yang bertugas untuk melindungi dan mengayomi
masyarakat. Tanggung jawab Polri memang sangat banyak sehingga tugas – tugas
Polri dibagi – bagi menjadi beberapa sub bidang. Unsur pelaksana tugas pokok
Polri terdiri dari Badan Intelijen Keamanan, Badan Reserse Kriminal, Badan
Pemeliharaan Keamanan, Korps Brigade Mobil, Korps Lalu Lintas, Detasemen Khusus
88 Anti Teror, dan Biro Operasi Polri.
Setiap unsur memiliki tugas dan
fungsinya masing – masing dalam menegakkan hukum yang berlaku di Indonesia.
Selain unsur pelaksana tugas pokok, Polri juga memiliki beberapa pendukung yang
tidak kalah penting yaitu Lembaga Pendidikan Polri, Pusat Logistik dan
Perbekalan Polri, Pusat Penelitian dan Pengembangan, Pusat Kedokteran dan
Kesehatan Polri, Pusat Keungan Polri, dan Pusat Sejarah Polri.
Setipa unsur diatas memiliki
satu orang pemimpin misalnya Pusat Logistik dan Perbekalan dipimpin oleh
Brigadir Jenderal atau Brigjen. Pusat keuangan Polri juga dipimpin oleh
Brigjen. Untuk dapat menjadi polisi, mereka harus mendaftar dan mengkuti
pendidikan polisi di Akademi Kepolisian atau Akpol. Akpol adalah lembaga pendidikan
khusus yang akan mempersiapkan calon – calon polisi profesional untuk
ditempatkan di seluruh wilayah Indonesia.
Akpol merupakan unsur pelaksana
pendidikan untuk membentuk Perwira Polri yang langsung ada di bawah
Kalemdikpol. Sejak tahun 1999, Akpol terpisah dari AAU, AAL, dan AKMIL serta
teknis administrasinya juga tidak berhubungan lagi dengan Mako Akademi TNI.
